Raji Malik is a self-taught guitarist/musician who has been playing and performing in the Philadelphia area for over 30 years, with influences ranging from Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin) to David Gilmore (Pink Floyd) , to Indian Classical music traditions and finger styles of yesterday and today. Raji believes in the power of music to heal and bring centering and peace. He writes, “All of our actions ripple out into the world, and kindness has medicinal powers just like music. These sound waves are intended to reduce stress and create a sense of spaciousness in our interior world so that we may more easily recognize our interconnection.”

This will be a meditative and reflective experience.  It will combine performance and interactive elements where participants can share their thoughts and feelings about the music, and also contribute percussive and vocal elements.

The workshop will begin by talking about the qualities of sound waves and listening. Participants will then engage in a brief mindful listening and breathing activity to help everyone reach a state of calm and comfort.

Raji will introduce pieces of music, describe his inspiration for each composition, and offer invitations to utilize a visualization/healing prompt for each song. At the conclusion of each piece, he will ask participants to reflect on their experiences. What images did you see? What emotions or sensations did you feel? Were the prompts helpful?

Participants will be invited to contribute percussive sounds with their hands and/or percussion instruments or household items. An opportunity for reflection will be offered at the close of this meditative musical experience.

ARTZ Notes invites you to come together with other participants to listen to music, make your own, and engage with each other and the performers. ARTZ Notes offers music and experiences as diverse as our participants. We are exploring different options – all of them virtual for now – including facilitating live performances paired with conversations, interactive improvisation and sing-alongs, and conversations and movement around pre-recorded music of all genres.
