Join percussionist Alex Shaw for a very special ARTZ Notes. Alex is a favorite every year at our annual fundraiser and now he’s back by popular demand for his second ARTZ Notes program. Alex is a Philadelphia-based percussionist, sound artist/composer, cultural producer, and arts educator working in the field for over twenty years. He specializes in Afro-Brazilian music traditions.
Many sounds surround us day and night, but how are we listening to them? How can we engage with and learn from our acoustic environments – both natural and human-made? This workshop explores storytelling through sound and the amazing sonic textures of percussion instruments. Participants are guided through deep listening experiences that will both center us and awaken our creative imagination. We will also engage in interactive music making utilizing our bodies, voices, and found objects.
*Headphones or high fidelity speakers are recommended to more fully access the sonic nuances of this session.
ARTZ Notes invites you to come together with other participants to listen to music, make your own, and engage with each other and the performers. ARTZ Notes offers music and experiences as diverse as our participants. We are exploring different options – all of them virtual for now – including facilitating live performances paired with conversations, interactive improvisation and sing-alongs, and conversations and movement around pre-recorded music of all genres.
